Moonrise over the snowy La Plata Mountains, Southwest Colorado
We’re starting a new feature today, celebrating the Southwest through month to month photography. At the end of each month we’ll collect and share a few of our favorite images of …
What we’re discovering
What we’re eating
Where we’re road tripping
What we’re reading
Whom we’re meeting
Plus scenics, sunsets, and favorite moments captured of our beloved Southwest.
Today’s photo essay is from February 2020.

What We’re Eating
A romantic and exquisite Valentine’s dinner at Olio, downtown Mancos, Colorado.
A delicious blend of Food, Wine, and Art.
Featured here is the delectable Elk Osso Buco,
Braised in Red Wine on House-Made Ricotta Gnocchi with Pistachio Gremolata.
What We’re Reading
The Mancos Valley is incredibly fortunate to have world renowned painter and bronze artist Veryl Goodnight amongst us. Her fine art western gallery is located in the downtown arts district. Veryl’s style is “A voice for animals and the softer side of the west.” We are pouring through her beautiful coffee table book, “No Turning Back.” where she shares stories of the animals, landscape, and personal history that have influenced four decades of her work.
Western History
The motto for Mancos is “Where the west still lives.” Above is an old cattle ramp on a snowy day, but rest assured, there are still cowboys and cowgirls who graze cattle in Mancos Valley. In fact, you just might catch a cattle drive right down the middle of main street.
Spa Day
Just a little north of Mancos is Ridgway, Colorado. This quaint old west town is notable for its filming locations on the 1969 movie True Grit. Today they are also known for a wonderful place to relax and pamper yourself, the Chipeta Solar Springs Resort & Spa named in honor of Chipeta, wife of the great Ute Indian leader Chief Ouray. The Utes once inhabited this valley of healing hot springs. Featured above is a replica of a teepee, used for quiet reflection and meditation.
We hope you enjoy our new monthly photo essays where new discoveries await. Our cameras are already charged and ready for March!
Wishing you Favorite Moments and Happy Discoveries!
