When Mr.D and I were researching our ideal forever home, Durango checked pretty much everything on our must-have list (but for a beach) including things like; great weather, scenic / beautiful, fantastic foodie scene, no earthquakes or tornados, a college town that brought in culture and concerts, a great library, outdoorsy, population less than twenty-thousand, quality hospital care, events and fairs, strong arts community and … an exceptional farmer’s market.
This past Saturday was opening day at the market and it was, as always, superabundant with quality foods, produce and artisan handcrafted items. I’d like to share a few photos with you of a day we look forward to every spring, starting with this … the most perfect bok choy I’ve ever seen … I mean just look at that thing … a big bright green bouquet of vitamins and minerals. From Schwebach’s Cedar Hill Farm.
Cherry pies from Serious Delights
Poblano starter plants from Mocking Crow Farm
Fresh eggs from Green Table Farm
Artisan pure body butters from Orchard House Farm
Grilled veggie bowls from Mountain Stir Fry
Prickly Pear Cactus Lemonade from Turtle Lake Refuge
Beautiful textured pottery from … oops, I guess I didn’t write this one down so if anyone knows their name please leave in the comments, or email me. Thanks!
Black Bean Green Chile Quiche from Bread
Sweet canned jams from RazzMaTazz Berries
Starter plants from Rohwer’s Farms
Carrot and Chocolate Zucchini Cakes from Earth Girls Goodies (their motto is the sign at the top of this post)
Beautifully glazed pitchers and colanders from Red Cliffs Pottery
Orange Mint from Tierra Madre Herbs
It’s a good idea to start early when the market opens at 8:00. This was the menu board at Summit Roots around 11:00 AM.
I’ll be covering more of the market as new produce comes into season. The tomatoes and peppers should be here in about three weeks! For more information here is their website.
And remember, try to eat less from a box and more from the earth.

Wow! I love how well you covered our market! Thank you! I am the current market manager and wondering if I may save your pictures to our collection?
